In Search of Meaning: Memory Becomes Us

Patricia Moss-Vreeland, an artist interested in the creative nature of memory, has a new exhibition with comments from Dasa Zeithamova at the Phillips Museum at the Franklin & Marshall College. If a trip to Lancanster, PA, is not in your immediate future, you can check out the highlights from the exhibition here: In Search of Meaning: Memory Becomes Us

ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTREACH

The Brain and Memory lab regulalry does outreach events at Eugene elementary and middle schools. At our hands-on demonstrations, we teach childern about memory, visual perception, and brain safety.

APPRENTICESHIPS IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

In 2017, Cait and Stefania (and Lea in 2018) did a hands-on workshop, “Mental Time Travel” for the Apprenticeships in Science & Engineering (AES) Saturday Academy in Corvallis, OR! The ASE program helps motivated high school students gain pre-professional internship experiences in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

ASE also offers a summer internship program for high schoolers. The Brain and Memory Lab has had the exciting opportunity to welcome a high-school intern into our lab several times! We always greatly enjoy the chance to talk to budding scientists about our work and facillitate the development of their own project.

SCIENCE PROGRAM TO INSPIRE CREATIVITY AND EXCELLENCE (SPICE)

The Brain and Memory lab often participates in the annual Science Open House of the Science Program to Inspire Creativity and Excellence (SPICE)! At the open house, we show children visual illusion demos, the human brain, memory experiment demos, and make our beloved brain hats. Our table is popular among children who were excited about science and the brain!

STUDENT ACADEMY TO INSPIRE LEARNING (SAIL)

The Summer Academic to Inspire Learning (SAIL) is an innovative pipeline program that helps local eighththrough twelfth graders prepare for college. We are always pleased to welcome SAIL students who were excited to learn about cognitive psychology! In the past, Dasa has presented some of our latest research findings and students participated in small experiments to learn about the research process.

MEET A SCIENTIST

The Brain and Memory Lab has been honored to join the Meet a Scientist event in Eugene’s own Science Factory. Children enjoy visualizing their brainwaves, participating in psychology experiments that look like games but also taught them about our memory and the scientific method, and making a brain hat that they decorate themselves! Parents also get involved and ask us lots of question about our research at the University. Everybody enjoyed themselves!

GIRLS’ SCIENCE ADVENTURES

Girls in grade 4-6 participated in a neuropsychology adventure day in which members of the UO Women in Graduate Sciences helped them learn all about how human brains work, how they change over time, and what they look like through a brain scan. This event is part of the Science Factory’s Girls’ Science Adventures workshop series.
